Junior National Champion Alan Sciuto (Orange, CA) and rookie sensation Brad Coleman (Houston, TX) had Christmas come early as the two 14-year-old prodigies drove a Formula Fran Am 1600 at the famed Buttonwillow Raceway this past weekend. Courtesy of World Speed Motorsports, Team MMI, and SKUSA, these two young drivers logged nearly 100 laps apiece while they impressed all of those in attendance.
“I was amazed to see these two young pilots take to the car so quickly,” remarked World Speed Team Owner Telo Stewart. Both young men handled the Fran Am racing machine as if they had practiced in it for months. I wouldn’t be a bit surprised to see both of these guys in professional racing at a very young age. They definitely have what it takes, and they both handle it with class.”
The invitation to the test drive was extended to the two boys at the SuperNats in Las Vegas in November. World Speed Motorsports, Team MMI, and SKUSA teamed up to bridge the gap between karting and professional motorsports in hopes to field more young American drivers in the top ranks such as F1, CART, and Indy.
“As far as World Speed and Team MMI are concerned, this was just the first step in developing younger American drivers, and if it was any indication of the talent that is out there, we are anticipating a very successful future for karting, the Fran Am Series, and the American professional racing scene,” stated Team MMI owner Bill Mayer. “These two young men put on a driving clinic that anyone would have been proud of, and we are looking for a lot of big things from them in the future.”
World Speed Motorsports runs a Formula Fran Am team out of the renowned Sears Point Raceway in Sonoma, CA, and Team MMI runs a world-class karting team out of nearby Livermore, CA. Both companies are dedicated to the development of young drivers that are serious about their racing careers.
