This season the SCCA® Club Racing Board created the new Formula X (FX) class intended for winged, open-wheel formula cars of modest power and performance below that of Formula 1000 or Formula Atlantic vehicles. Cars falling within Formula X for 2020 included Formula Mazda, Formula 4 and tube frame USF2000 vehicles. This month the FormulaSPEED was added to the list of eligible designs to vie for the SCCA FX Championship.
World Speed partnered with Fast Forward Racing Components to design the original car in 2009. In 2011 the SCCA approved the FormulaSPEED for competition in the Formula Atlantic class, and in 2016 the current GEN2 FormulaSPEED was launched.
“We are thrilled to be classed with cars of similar power and lap times in the new FX championship.” stated World Speed Official Mark Milazzo. “We will compete for the Formula X overall championship, and we will also provide prizes and awards to Formula X racers who are Mazda powered and racing on Goodyear Racing tires through our championship entity; The Formula Car Challenge presented by Goodyear. Of course schedules and details are currently on hold due to current world events.”
Since 2010, over 50 racers have used the FormulaSPEED to train in, and 36 of those drivers have actually entered FS races and secured points paying finishes. FormulaSPEED competitors have gone on to be selected for the Team USA Championship, win the Indy Lights Championship, win at Pikes Peak, and compete in IndyCar, IMSA, and Trans-Am.
